Hopelands Gardens and Rye Patch are more than just pretty places. Following the success of Nature Rocks! (see “News and Events”– an afternoon of science and fun at Hopelands Gardens for families), the Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch decided it was time to bring outdoor education to elementary-aged children in the CSRA.
“Mrs. Iselin was fully conscious of the importance of passing along to the young people and children her own deep pleasure in the beauty of nature, and she knew that the experience is rooted in early years. She knew that it was important for children to not only enjoy time in nature, but learn about it as well” (Mrs. Patricia Davidson, Iselin Foundation Trustee).
HOPE (Hopelands Outdoors Premier Education) is a collaboration with the USCAiken Ruth Patrick Science Education Center. In the Fall and Spring, the Gardens are alive with first to fifth graders as they participate in classes about environment, biology, wildlife, history, and more.
Why outdoor education? It provides:
- hands-on learning
- problem-solving and critical thinking
- connection with nature
- fun, relevant, empowering learning
and, best of all, digital detox!
Imagine the children’s enthusiasm as they learn about Good-Natured Detectives, Discover Mother Nature, Learn About Life and Land through Lab study, Field study and an Eco-hike. No one is sitting at a desk quietly reading or raising a hand to ask a question at Hopelands Gardens!
This program can only continue by receiving donations from individuals, businesses and corporations. We invite you to be a part of these morning classes and see what all the excitement is about! Please email us at info@hopelandsgardens.com for more information.
